In the last three decades of militancy, around 2000 Kashmiris, defying a shutdown call in the strife-torn Bandipora district, gathered at the floodlit Sher-e-Kashmir stadium, 66 km from Srinagar, for a football match. The match between Mohammadan Sports Sopore and Real Football Kashmir Club ended in a draw. However, during the 90 minutes of the match, people forgot about the turbulence in their district and concentrated on the spirit of sportsmanship. Packed to its capacity, a group of football lovers, who had gathered at the stadium before the match, said, this was the first time they had seen a football match on such a grand scale. Bandipora has instilled new life in football and the hope is to sustain and have a ripple effect too.
